HMRC VAT Enquiries – What you should know
VAT enquiries often start with an innocuous letter requesting a check of the business records.
Before such a letter is issued, HMRC will have carried out extensive research in to the business as they believe something is wrong with the returns submitted.
If you receive such a letter, we would advise postponing any suggested visit to enable advice to be taken in order that the process can be managed. This is of particular importance if any disclosures are to be made as we would discuss how best to make the disclosures to minimise the risk of criminal prosecution.
HMRC also have a tendency to arrive unannounced at business premises and will produce a letter advising they are authorised to carry out their inspection. If this happens to you – DO NOT PANIC!
Whilst they have a document, they do not have the right of entry and can be asked to rearrange the meeting for a time when you can be properly represented. You should seek appropriate specialist advice immediately – we are happy to speak to officers whilst they are on the premises if necessary.
